Original Manuscript

Genealogy of the Winn Family Data compiled in the 1930s by:

  • James A. Winn
  • 916 North Fifth St.,
  • Fort Scott, Arkansas

I transcribed this information from this hand-typed manuscript into my Family Origins database. The software then generated the beginnings of this web site. The manuscript covers much more of this family than my site, so I provide the document in its entirety (above.)

The manuscript consists of 37 pages on hand-cut off-white paper. In 1963, my mother Beatrice E. (nee Winn) Smart retyped/copied the info. I believe she obtained the additional information from one or two aunts in Protection, Kansas.

The manuscript's claims to descendant from Sir Owen Wynne are extremely weak. James provides little reference to sources.

Was James the source of those common misconceptions that have plagued attempts to get this family's story straight? Or just an echo of someone else's fantasy, ground into family lore simply by repetition over time? I doubt we will learn more about this manuscript and its sources.

His information on the Minor - William - Minor H. line seem to be accurate for the most part. But the information should be qualified to this source and compared to better documentation as it becomes available.

However flawed, it must have been an arduous task to assemble so much history--an endeavor that deserves our applause. Much is owed for James's efforts to introduced us to our ancestry. With advancing information technology, we should be able to take things much further.

Over the years, I have been able to make corrections and additions based on other's research. I am only now finding ways to document this data and changes to it. This web site is a presentation of this lineage with all the information well-sourced. To that end, I took some time and scanned the entire document. I also put together a wee peek for those with restricted access.
