  • Called Minor and also Minor IV. MS
  • Middle name shown as Hampton per Allen Pendergraft's death record.

    • Jesse Hampton Winn 1

Winnsboro was known by that name as early as 1777.  Camden District est. 1769, South Carolina in 1788, and Fairfield District 1798. Given his birthdate, place of birth would have been Camden Judicial District, South Carolina Colony. Wiki

This Family - analysis by Bob Saunders

The best sources linking Minor and Matilda Winn to their children are:

  • A 1826 TN circuit court record where Minor H. Winn is the defendent, Zadock and John Winn sign as surety.
  • The 1840 census of West Fork links Minor H. Winn to three of his children - son James ; female [Hutchins], daughter of Minor and wife of Anderson Hutchins; and female [Hutchans], daughter of Minor and wife of Aquillar Hutchans [Aquilla Hutchens/Hutchins].  The two daughters are Jane "Jennie" and Winifred "Winnie."  Minor, James, Anderson and Aquilla are also found in early Washington co., AR, tax records. 1
  • Son, Zadok , moved to West Fork, AR, later in his life. 1
  • The 1860 census of West Fork shows Dicey Winn  living with Anderson and Jane Hutchins, her son-in-law and daughter. 1
  • Minor H. and and three of the children shown here lived in West Fork, AR at the same time. 1

Tracing Steps

1800

SC Fairfield co. census - Minor Winn, Jr. Minor Winn, Jr., is on the same page of census as Rosey Winn.1These could well be son and mother. The Jr. simply means he was the younger of two Minor Winns in the area census. 1

I have 1800 and 1810 Fairfield Co., SC, census records, which might be for our Minor. The age ranges are correct, but I can't say for certain he's the right person. 1

1810 SC Fairfield co. census - Minor H. Winn. 1
1810 TN Bedford co. - Settled here (where he was living) after marrying Matilda. MS
1820 This family not found in census. 1
1826

TN Maury co. circuit court case - Minor H. Winn of that county sued by John Hatchett: Sureties = Zadock and John Winn. 1

Minor H. Winn and his family moved to IL about 1830?  1

1830

IL Pike co. census - (Minor) Winn - Age classes in this houshold: No age class given for Minor. 1 female b. 1780-90 (matches some info. re. Matilda). 3 females b. 1810-15 (one matches info for Jane: other 2?). 1 male b. 1825-30 (?) 1

1831

IL Greene co. marriage record index - Jane Winn and Anderson Hutchens married on September 1, 1831 (Greene and Pike co. are adjacent). 1

I doubt she went there by herself to be married.  The Hutchens were from West Fork, and they probably migrated from AR to IL with the Winns. 1

1833 AR Washington co. - History of AR (Goodspeed) has James Winn and Nancy Bloyd married on March 17, 1833. 1
1836 AR Washington co. - He moved ~1836 to Washington co., AR. MS
1836 Winifred Winn and John Aquilla Hutchens married per family record by Rita Townsend. 1
1836 AR Washington co. - He resided there. MS
1837 AR Washington co. -Tax lists of 1830-39 lists Minor Winn, James Winn, James Winn, Anderson Hutchins (Jane's husband), and A. J. Hutchins (Winnie's husband). 1
1837

AR Washington co. - Minor H. Winn was a Washington Co. tax payer. 1

I haven't found any deed records for him.  I suspect these early records have been lost or destroyed. 1

1835-48 A search of Washington co. Circuit Court records for Minor H. Winn found nothing.  Too old to participate in community activities? 1
1840 AR Washington co.census - Minor H. Winn, James Winn, female (Jane) Hutchins, female (WInnie) Hutchans. 1
1841 AR Washington  co. - Minor H. Winn was listed as a tax payer in West Fork. This may indicate he died in 1841 or later.  1
1841 AR Washington co. - Minor H. Winn, of West Fork Tsp is on the AR tax lists. 1
1850 AR Washington co. census - James Wynn, Jane Hutchins, Winna Huchins. Minor/Matilda Winn not found. 1
1854

AR tax lists -  Minor H. Winn, gone; error in tax calculation.  1

Gone could mean he moved from Washington Co., AR, or he died and the tax collectors didn't know it. 1

1860

AR Washington co. census - Dicey Winn, James Winn, Jane Hutchins, Winford Huchins. 1

Dicey Winn, his wife, was living with her daughter, Jane Hutchins. 1
